Marco Grasso was born in Genoa in 1953 and began his musical studies at Genoa’s “Nicolò Paganini” Conservatoire, where he studied piano and composition. He embarked on his career as a Composer and Arranger in 1978 for the publisher Aldo Pagani, working in collaboration with the Argentinean composer Astor Piazzola - a great meeting of minds that spurred him towards musical experimentation, research, the use of orchestra, new atmospheres and new musical horizons. He founded and conducted the musical group "Persimfans", where the interplay between classical and non-classical music that would later become the trademark of his musical art was already present. It was precisely these experiences between 1980 and 1988 that would lead him to work for theatre and modern dance, collaborating with his city’s leading theatres and forging close artistic and professional ties with the percussionist Tullio De Piscopo. In 1987, he composed the score for the film “UN AMORE DI DONNA” starring Bruno Ganz and Laura Morante. These years also saw alliances with Easy Listening artists, putting his classical background as well as his compositional and innovative flair at the service of pop music.
This work took him to the 1990 San Remo Festival as Orchestral conductor for Caterina Caselli’s major comeback
On this occasion he also conducted the international artist Miriam Makeba, with whom he established a deep artistic and cooperative rapport.
